Seoul retaliates by test firing two missiles while North Korea's 'still flying', but one flops into the ocean

South Korea responded to Pyongyang's latest provocative missile test by firing two of its own in a retaliatory show of force on Friday. The Hyunmoo-2 missiles were launched by the South Korean military from an eastern site close to the border with the North, just six minutes after Pyongyang flew a ballistic missile about 3,700 km over Japan and into the North Pacific Ocean. One Hyunmoo-2 "accurately hit" a simulated target located at the same distance as the North Korean launch site, a military official reported. But the second failed at the initial launch stage and flopped into the water. South Korea's missile system firing Hyunmu-2 missile into the East Sea from an undisclosed location  Credit: AFP PHOTO AND South Korean Defence Ministry The official said the South's military response came while the North's missile was still flying. It reveals a toughening of Seoul's stance towards Pyongyang's military build-up, even as South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday ruled out the return of nuclear weapons to his country. "If we respond to the situation with an attitude that we will counter a nuclear-armed North with a nuclear-armed South, peace cannot be maintained between the two Koreas," Moon said in an interview with CNN. "Furthermore, it will trigger a nuclear arms race in the entire Northeast Asia." North Korean missile test Ahead of a trip to the United Nations next week to address the North Korean crisis, Mr Moon also denied there was any rift with the US after President Donald Trump earlier denounced the South's "talk of appeasement" on Twitter. Mr Moon will deliver a speech to the UN General Assembly which is expected to set the tone of his future approach to the North. Meanwhile on Friday, South Korean Foreign Minister, Kang Kyung-wha discussed the latest provocation in telephone calls with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and her Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono. Unnerving missile alert sirens ring out in Japan 00:36 While Mr Tillerson reaffirmed America's "unwavering commitment" protecting South Korea and Japan, they also agreed to take "powerful" and "stern" measures in a way that leads the North to give up its weapons programmes and enter denuclearisation talks.......

Cassini grand finale live: Nasa probe begins final descent after 20 years in space

Nasa has lost contact with its Cassini space probe, bringing an end to the 20-year mission as the craft plunged to fiery destruction in Saturn's atmosphere. The 22ft robot, which launched in 1997, was running out of fuel so controllers chose to bring the mission to an end, hoping to harvest new scientific data about the gas planet's atmosphere in the final minutes. Cassini and took seven years to travel two billion miles to Saturn, before embarking on a 13-year journey of discovery that delivered a wealth of scientific data on the planet and its moons. Shortly before 1pm UK time, it broke into fragments and burned up as it ploughed into the ringed planet's cloud tops, ending a 20-year mission that cost £2.9 billion. Daniel Brown, an astronomy expert at Nottingham Trent University, said flight engineers had their work cut out keeping the craft stable as it hurtled towards its destruction, sending back invaluable data all the time. "The craft will tumble and move around and that all has to be corrected," he said. "You are balancing the the amount of science you can collect against how long it can survive."   Earth appears as a pale blue dot below Saturn's majestic rings in this stunning image taken by the Cassini space probe - can you spot it? Credit:  PA What was the purpose of the Cassini mission? To study Saturn and its moons from close up and in the process learn more about the solar system and how it was formed. Scientists were especially interested in Saturn's giant moon Titan, which has a nitrogen and methane atmosphere and in some ways resembles an early version of Earth. The whole mission cost £2.9 billion. When was Cassini launched and how long did it take to reach Saturn? Cassini was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 1997 and took seven years to reach Saturn, travelling two billion miles. On the way it made fly-bys of Venus, the Earth, and Jupiter to receive gravitational "kicks" that boosted its speed to more than 42,500mph. Cassini arrived at the ringed planet in July 2004. Confusion as Russia and Belarus begin joint war games

The first day of major joint war games between Russia and Belarus began in confusion Thursday, as the militaries of both countries announced the Russians would be moving in opposite directions.  The defence ministry in Moscow first announced that units of the Russian first tank army were rushing toward Belarus - a statement swiftly denied by the Belarusian military, who insisted the Russian tanks were heading to training bases in their own country.  The confusion only exacerbated fears that the Zapad war games taking place largely in Belarus are a cover for a Russian assault, like those that preceded the annexation of Crimea and intervention in eastern Ukraine in 2014.  Belarus' Col.Alexander Prokopenko, left, reads his order to start the drills at a training ground Credit: Vayar m/AP Many have joked that the Russian forces—officially numbering 3,000—might not withdraw at the end of the exercises, and analysts have speculated that they could leave behind military equipment to cut down deployment time in case of conflict. "Without question, all participants of the exercises will return to their permanent bases after the exercises, including the Russian units to the territory of the Russian Federation," Vladimir Makarov, spokesman of the Belarusian defence ministry, told journalists. He added that the war games "don't hold any danger for Belarus, for neighbouring countries, for Ukraine". Yet while the exercises are designed to demonstrate Russia's ability to fight Nato, they have also eroded Minsk's claims to neutrality and alarmed its neighbours. On Thursday, Poland's defence minister called Zapad 2017 a "serious threat" to regional security, and Ukraine has been holding its own "Unflinching Firmness" military manoeuvres this week. Even before it started, Zapad had been rattling Nato and its allies. Sweden is holding its largest military exercises in two decades, responding to a simulated attack from the direction of Russia, and US army tanks and fighting vehicles arrived in northern Poland on Monday as part of the ongoing Operation Atlantic Resolve exercises. A Belarus' soldier aims his anti-aircraft gun at a training ground at an undisclosed location in Belarus.  Credit: Vayar Military Agency/AP Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian president who has long played Russia and the West off each other for aid money, cheap oil and political benefit, has only reluctantly proceeded with this year's biannual joint exercises.  Displaying unusual openness, the Belarusian authorities said they have invited more than 80 observers from international organisations and nearby countries.  The 12,700 troops officially said to be participating—Western pundits have estimated up to 100,000 could actually be involved—fall under the threshold for broad international monitoring. "Belarus has been trying to distance itself from Russia and establish neutrality in tensions between Russia and the West, and these exercises ruin this," said analyst Valery Karbalevich.  A Russian T-90 tank firing in Kubinka Patriot Park outside Moscow during the first day of the "Army 2017" International Military-Technical Forum. Credit: Aleander Nemenov/AFP "But Belarus can't refuse because it would be very disloyal to Russia." If it wasn't already clear that the Zapad exercises were a thinly veiled preparation for a conflict with Nato, their supposed "aggressor countries"—called Lubeniya, Veishnoriya and Vesbasriya—were located roughly where Lithuania, Latvia and Poland are on a map shown at the Russian defence ministry briefing. Moscow is demonstrating to Washington and Nato it can quickly establish control of Belarus and cut a corridor to the Russian exclave Kaliningrad, headquarters of the Baltic fleet, according to analyst Alexander Golts. "For first time in many years Russia is openly working out military actions against Nato members," he said. The war games also showcase Russian military equipment, which was on display to buyers at the Army expo in Moscow earlier th

Being a parent sucks – so don't blame dads for not wanting to stay at home

Striking new data from the Office of National Statistics this week has effectively proven what we all suspected – that being a stay-at-home parent is bloody awful. Apparently, thousands of former stay-at-home dads are scurrying back to work in their droves. At last count, there were 232,000 left in the UK, the lowest number since 2014, and a sharp drop against a pattern which has been steadily increasing since 1993. While the reasons for this rat-like reverse-fleeing back onto the sinking ship are presumably numerous and manifold, a hunch says that the scales have simply fallen from their eyes. That the job of caring for a child 9-5 as well as 5-9 and 5-9 again in the morning (with a bit of 12-12:30 and 3-4 thrown in between the two) is not the lazy float down the Nile they were banking on. They've realised that being a stay-at-home parent isn't all mid-morning coffees and card games with the girls. That you don't get a pat on the back and a medal for being a "New Man". That you won't spend hours mooching around Marks and Spencers with a yoga mat under your arm, nor spend your afternoons training yourself for future seasons of Bake Off. Most pertinently, to the ones who surrendered themselves to this vocation for all of the right reasons: could it be that you have since realised that spending extra time with the apple of your eye mightn't be the profound experience you were hoping for? That children aren't surprisingly wise and loving for ones so young, but unutterably selfish in the most literal way possible?   Josh Burt often fills in as the stay-at-home parent Credit:  Rii Schroer/The Telegraph As a freelance writer (a preposterous way to make a living), with enough time on my hands to frequently (worryingly frequently) step in as a full-time dad, I know first-hand that the art of navigating a child through a typical day is a perilous voyage not for the faint hearted. A conveyor belt of demands to be met, bottoms to be wiped, and fires to be put out that will have you pining for unnecessary four-hour morning meetings and excruciating "brainstorming" sessions. Yes, your heart explodes with unconditional love for them, and you might experience touchingly profound moments of bonding at unexpected times of the day, but who's to say you wouldn't get those at work too? The reality is that you're choppered into 'Nam every morning, and ordered to make it to the end of the day unscathed. An impossible mission if ever there was one. Have you ever actually spent an entire day in the company of a toddler? They're THE WORSTJoshua Burt Of course, on a societal level, this dip in the numbers of dads willing to undertake the lions' share of the parenting also comes as a disappointing backwards step, and a great shame. Especially at a time when tired old notions of masculinity appear to be dominating the global political stage (see: Trump's endless Alpha Male dick swinging), you feel that now more than ever, it's paramount for men to re-appraise their roles and to embrace feminist ideals. The generations of fathers taking a back seat, demanding a "breadwinner" role, and using it as an excuse to shun responsibility, and to shirk the trickier parts of parenting – it doesn't fit the modern ideal, and neither should it. But, then again, have you ever actually spent an entire day in the company of a toddler? They're THE WORST. Take Joe Pesci during his most unpredictable scenes in Goodfellas, and times his irrational behaviour by a thousand. Then you're halfway there. About a year or so after my son's birth – back when I had an actual job – I remember talking to a much younger colleague about the realities of fatherhood. The impossibility of getting an entire night's sleep, the conveyor belt of nappies, the perpetual shrieking (from child and parents) yada, yada, yada. And the more I lifted the lid on these haunting tales of parental woe, the more they winced and gasped, before asking me how I managed to get any downtime. "This is it," I explain

'North Korea is a terrorist nation': Missile test met with anger and fear in Japan

Japanese people reacted with a mixture of anger and resignation to North Korea's latest test launch of a missile over northern Japan, with some suggesting that the international community should now treat the regime of Kim Jong-un as a "terrorist organisation". Millions of residents were awoken by sirens and alerts on Friday as Pyongyang fired its second missile over the country in less than a month. "Japanese people have not been subjected to this kind of threat since the end of the war more than 70 years ago", said Ken Kato, a Tokyo-based human rights activist. "People genuinely feel that unless something is done quite soon, then their families are at risk", he told The Telegraph. "This is the situation we are in now and we have to adapt to these realities, but these missile launches and nuclear tests are leading a lot of people to conclude that Japan needs its own nuclear deterrent. A passerby walks under a TV screen reporting news about North Korea's missile launch in Tokyo Credit: Reuters "Personally, the launch did not come as much of a surprise because this is becoming a fact of life for us in Japan", he said. "But there is also a growing sense of anger among ordinary people.  "North Korea is a terrorist nation and I expect this situation to escalate even further", he added.  Mayako Shibata, a university student, was more relaxed about the threat posed by North Korean missiles. "I am not nervous about these launches because I do not believe they are firing at targets in Japan, so this is not really an attack", she said. "Launches like this are more part of the political game that it being played out by Pyongyang, Seoul, Tokyo and Washington.  "To me, it is stupid behaviour by the North Koreans because they should not be firing missiles over a neighbouring country - but no-one I know is going to the extremes of stockpiling food and water or making preparations for a missile hitting Japan". "I cannot say that we are used to this. I mean, the missile flew right above our town. It's not a very comforting thing to hear," Yoshihiro Saito, who works in the small fishing town of Erimo on Hokkaido, told AFP. "It's pretty scary." Of all the people in Japan, it is ethnic North Koreans who are arguably in the most difficult situation. "We are really worried about the current situation and really want everything to settle down again", said Chung Hyon-suk, who lives in Tokyo but whose sons attended North Korean-run schools.  Video of sirens sounding in Niigata, Japan warning citizens of the incoming #DPRK missile from @joshdcaplanpic.twitter.com/yH6jHXGWy1— Strategic Sentinel (@StratSentinel) September 14, 2017 "Both sides need to listen to each other and find a peaceful way to solve their problems", she said.  "If North Korea is developing missiles, then the rest of the world has to ask why instead of simply saying their leaders are 'insane' ", she said. And other ethnic North Koreans living in Japan are fearful that the current instability may make them targets. "I have heard that parents are walking with their kids to school in the morning and then meeting them in the evening to go home", Mrs Chung said. "They just want to protect them".......
