LOS ANGELES -- Ryan Lochte is returning to USA Swimming competition this week for the first time since his 10-month suspension for his behavior at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics ended. The 32-year-old new father will compete at the L.A. Invitational, which begins Thursday on the Southern California campus where he trains and now represents Trojan Swim Club. His times of 48.16 seconds in the 100 free and 1 minute, 54.00 seconds in the IM are top-seeded. Lochte was ineligible to compete at the recent U.S. nationals, which kept him from qualifying for the world championships beginning July 23 in Hungary. His suspension ended June 30. After returning from Rio, Lochte moved his training base from North Carolina to Los Angeles, where he appeared on "Dancing With the Stars." He became a first-time father last month when son Caiden was born. Lochte's first meet since Rio was in a.........

In no time his feet are soaking in a tub, one woman exfoliating his heels while another massages his shoulders under his T-shirt, working the lotion bottle with her elbow so as not to lose contact with his skin. Lochte, 32, leans back, pleased. While most professional athletes get massages several times a week, they're unusual for him. Training or not, Lochte has never been the best at self-care, preferring instead to err on the side of fun, which for him means all manner of Florida backwoods tomfoolery, something Kyle Deery, his closest friend from childhood, describes as a.........

Oregon?dismissed standout receiver Darren Carrington on Friday, two weeks after the fifth-year senior's arrest for driving under the influence of intoxicants. Ducks coach Willie Taggart said in a statement that he informed Carrington on Friday that he's no longer a member of the program. "We will always consider Darren a Duck and support him in any way we can," Taggart said in the statement. "We wish him all the best in his future endeavors." Oregon had indefinitely suspended Carrington following his July 1 arrest. Police stopped him in downtown Eugene after receiving a call of a possibly intoxicated driver. Carrington projected to be Oregon's top wide receiver in his fifth season, after he led the team with 606 receiving yards and ranked second with 43 receptions in 2016. Arbitrator overturns Gil Roberts' drug ban after sprinter's 'kissing' defense

Olympic gold medalist Gil Roberts, who was suspended in May for a positive drug test, has had that decision reversed by an arbitrator, who upheld the sprinter's defense that the drug was in his system due to frequent and passionate kissing of his girlfriend. A professional since 2009, Roberts was part of the United States' 4-by-400 relay team that won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In March, he tested positive for a drug called probenecid, and in May, the United States Anti-Doping Agency said Roberts' B sample also tested positive for the masking agent. The case went to an arbitrator in June. As part of the evidence, the stepfather of Roberts' girlfriend said she was in India a few weeks before the March test and came down with a sinus infection. A local "chemist" there directed her to take one capsule of Moxylong per day for a period of two weeks. The woman,?Alex Salazar, continued to take the medicine when she returned to the U.S., breaking.........

James Harden: Carmelo Anthony would 'help our team tremendously'

GILBERT, Ariz. -- The Houston Rockets have two-thirds of their own Big Three with James Harden and the newly acquired Chris Paul. The Rockets also were reportedly in the mix to acquire New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony in a trade. Harden called Anthony "one of the best players that we have in this league" during a break from a basketball camp he hosted Friday in a suburb of Phoenix. But, ultimately, Harden said acquiring Anthony would be up to the Rockets brass. "I let the front office deal with that," Harden said. "If we can get him, obviously he would help our team tremendously. What we have right now in our locker room is pretty good." The chances of the Harden-Anthony-Chris Paul trio coming to fruition took a hit Thursday. The Knicks took Anthony off the trading block, according to a report by ESPN NBA Insiders Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne. Talks between the Knicks and the Rockets,.........

Vikings' Zimmer tells WR Floyd if he's lying to him he'll get cut

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Floyd will be on a short leash with coach Mike Zimmer. Zimmer, asked by the Pioneer-Press about Floyd's kombucha tea defense, said he told Floyd, "If I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to cut you." Floyd was ordered by a judge in Arizona to spend a day in jail last month after failing several alcohol tests, violating the terms of his house arrest for extreme DUI. Floyd told the judge he'd been drinking kombucha tea, unaware that it contained alcohol, which accounted for the failed test. Vikings CEO Kevin Warren wrote a letter of support for Floyd, attesting to his character and saying kombucha tea was used by many professional athletes as a probiotic and is available at the Vikings facility on a daily basis. "Do I believe it? I don't know how much tea he drank. I have no clue," Zimmer told the Pioneer Press. "I don't have any doubt why there'd be skepticism, but he told me.........

Ezekiel Elliott preparing response to NFL investigation

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has received a report from the NFL on its findings related to its investigation into a 2016 assault accusation against him and he is preparing a response to the league that is expected to be submitted sometime over the next week, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Multiple sources close to the situation told Schefter that Elliott could face a one- or two-game suspension, but the league has denied that any decision on discipline has been made, and could not be made until its investigation is complete. "The NFL is looking to pin something on him," one source familiar with the investigation said. It is one of the reasons that Elliott now is bracing for a short suspension, even if the league insists no decisions have been made, sources said. Last July, Elliott was questioned by Columbus, Ohio, police after a former girlfriend alleged an incident in which Elliott forcibly pulled her out of a car. The district.........

NCAA tournament committee to emphasize quality road wins

The men's basketball selection committee will put a greater emphasis on quality road wins beginning next season, the NCAA announced on Friday. Next year, teams aiming for the NCAA tournament will be evaluated according to quality home wins (top 30 in the RPI), neutral site wins (top 50) and road wins (top 75). The tiers expand from there with the same criteria. A team that beats an opponent rated 50th on the road will get more credit for that victory than it would for a home win over a squad ranked 40th in the eyes of the committee. The change will also ensure teams will not suffer the same penalties for road losses as they do for home wins in the selection process. "We consulted with experts within the coaching and analytics fields who looked at historical data, based on winning percentages by game location, to come up with these dividing lines within each of the columns," Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, the current chair of the committee, said in the.........

Michael Pineda to get 2nd opinion on Tommy John surgery recommendation

The New York Yankees on Friday said Michael Pineda needs Tommy John surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament, but the pitcher will get a second opinion before opting to have the season-ending procedure. In addition, first baseman Greg Bird also is seeking a doctor's second opinion about having surgery for inflammation in his ankle. General manager Brian Cashman said the team recommended surgery after Pineda's diagnosis, and Cashman made it sound as if surgery was likely for Bird. Pineda is 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA and 92 strikeouts this season for the Yankees. Bird, who took batting practice with short-season Staten Island on Tuesday, will either need surgery -- which would keep him out at least another two months -- or he will get another cortisone shot to get through the season. He is hitting .100 with one home run and three RBIs in just 60 at-bats this season. The 24-year-old, who missed all of the 2016 season after having shoulder.........

Red Sox designate Pablo Sandoval for assignment

The Pablo Sandoval era is over in Boston. Sandoval was informed Friday that he has been designated for assignment, the Red Sox announced. The move effectively terminates one of the worst free-agent signings in franchise history, although the Red Sox still owe the 30-year-old third baseman approximately $49 million through the end of the 2019 season. Boston has 10 days to either trade or release Sandoval. The Red Sox signed Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million contract after the 2014 season. He was coming off a stellar postseason and a third World Series title with the San Francisco Giants and was pursued aggressively by both the Giants and the San Diego Padres. But Sandoval's tenure with the Red Sox was characterized by poor performance, multiple injuries and frustration by the team over his subpar conditioning. In 161 games for the Sox, he batted .237 with 14 homers, 59 RBIs, a .646 OPS and 21 errors at third base. Sandoval was.........
