Disaster averted, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka embraces lottery success

NEW YORK -- Years ago, during his first visit to New York City as an agent representing players in the NBA draft, Rob Pelinka decided to go for an early morning run through Central Park. He began before sunrise, striding alongside the park's reservoir, by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the miles adding up before everything was alight. And that night, Pelinka's clients did well; they were selected high or landed in promising situations. Every year since, Pelinka continued that ritual, those pre-dawn runs in the park, and every year, it seemed that things worked in his favor. Around 6 a.m. Tuesday, Pelinka arrived in the park, again hoping for luck but needing it more than ever. No longer did his focus center on his clients' futures, having left his post as a powerhouse agent, famously representing Kobe Bryant. Now, as the Lakers' general manager, Pelinka oversaw a rebuilding franchise miles away from its past success, one that, hours later, at the New York.........

We are assuming every eligible prospect who has yet to state his intention declares his availability for the draft. The selections are based on team needs and conversations with NBA scouts and general managers. 1. Boston Celtics (via Nets) Markelle Fultz Washington Freshman Guard The Celtics were the big winners in more ways than one. Not only do they get the No. 1 pick, but now they control the draft, making trade offers even more lucrative. If they keep the pick, Fultz is the clear choice for them. He can play both the 1 and the 2, he stretches the floor and he.........

Gregg Popovich knocks Spurs for 'lack of edge, intensity' in Game 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- While Kawhi Leonard ordered dinner from the team hotel, the rest of the San Antonio Spurs choked down a heaping helping of disheartening defeat by way of a 136-100 annihilation at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, which dropped the visitors to 0-2 in this Western Conference finals series, and led to coach Gregg Popovich questioning his squad's fortitude. "The only way I can process this is it's not about O's and X's, rebounds, turnovers or anything like that," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Kawhi being gone, I don't think as I watched... I don't think they believed. And you have to believe. I don't think as a group they really did, which means probably a little bit of feeling sorry for themselves psychologically, subconsciously, whatever psycho-babble word you want to use. I don't think they started the game with a belief, and it showed in the lack of edge, intensity, grunt, all that sort of thing. That was disappointing." .........

Nearly arrested? Mike Brown had a very good excuse for being late to Game 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Acting Warriors coach Mike Brown had a legitimate excuse for his late arrival at Oracle Arena for Game 2 of the Western Conference finals. Brown was driving in front of the Spurs team bus at a freeway exit, along with his son Cam -- a huge fan of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich -- and a couple of friends in his SUV on Tuesday. Initially, Brown was ushered through several red lights without having to stop, but then multiple officers on motorcycles yelled for Brown to hold up. Even after he offered this: "I'm, like, 'Warriors acting coach,''' he said, pointing to the logo on his shirt. "He's like, 'I don't care. Hey, you, stop!''' At the final red light before he reached the gates to the stadium parking lots, Brown's luck ran out. "I'm like, 'This is great, I didn't have to stop for any of these red lights,''' Brown said. "So I literally start to go, and I'm going to get in the far left lane to go through where we all go through, and a cop out of.........

Boston Celtics get top pick in NBA draft thanks to Nets trade

A day after reaching the Eastern Conference finals, the Boston Celtics won the NBA draft lottery, earning the No. 1 pick. The Celtics will be followed by the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers. Boston becomes the first team to finish with the top record in a conference and then pick first overall since the Lakers did so and made James Worthy the No. 1 pick in the 1982 draft. The Celtics got the pick in a swap with the? Brooklyn Nets?as part of the continuing fallout of a 2013 trade that sent Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry?to Brooklyn. The Nets had the worst record in the league this season and thus had the greatest chance at getting the No. 1 pick. Brooklyn, in turn, will get the Celtics' pick in the draft, which is No. 27 overall. Boston also owns Brooklyn's first-round pick in next year's draft. Pierce, who retired at the end of the season, took to Twitter to acknowledge.........

Lonzo Ball is undecided on whether he'll work out for teams other than the Lakers, a source close to Ball tells ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. "We will make that decision closer to June," the source said.? The source added that it's been "clear from the start our desired destination is Los Angeles." Ball starred in his only season at nearby UCLA. He also played high school ball at Chino Hills. A Lakers source says the team will look at dozens of players with the second and 28th picks. The players under the strongest consideration at No. 2 right now are Markelle Fultz, Ball, De'Aaron Fox, Josh Jackson and Jayson Tatum. Speaking after the draft lottery Tuesday night, general manager Rob Pelinka noted there's no clear-cut No. 1. "The harder call may be the first one," he said. "Sometimes having the second pick is better than the first. We're sitting in a fantastic position. "I think there are four, five guys that are well suited to be [drafted] at.........

According to a source, Iguodala didn't participate in much of the up-and-down court work leading up to Sunday's Western Conference finals opener because of his knee soreness. The Warriors' super reserve played only 10 minutes Sunday, scoring two points and registering an assist in the team's 113-111 comeback victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1. ......

It is not clear how or if he will be disciplined under the agreement reached with the board, and the deal allowed him to avoid a public hearing that was set for Monday, according to the Times. Blake was leaning against a pole just outside the door of the Grand Hyatt New York in midtown Manhattan in September 2015 when Frascatore, dressed in plainclothes, approached suddenly, grabbed Blake's arm and tackled him to the ground. High School Quarterback's Tragic Death Highlights Silent Danger of an Enlarged Spleen

A spleen can become enlarged for many reasons, including genetic diseases, William Katkov, MD, a gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Health. Here's why that's a problem: A person may feel better and resume their normal activities, but their enlarged spleen is more susceptible to rupturing and may no longer be protected by their ribcage, leaving it incredibly vulnerable to injury. "An enlarged spleen is at an increased risk for rupture or injury in the setting of normal trauma, like a football game, diving into a pool, or minor car accident," Katkov says. While an enlarged spleen can be asymptomatic, Katkov says a person can feel uncomfortable or have a feeling of fullness in their upper abdomen on the left side.......

Gregg Popovich says Kawhi Leonard likely out for Game 2, rips Zaza Pachulia for 'dangerous' play

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich spoke out angrily about Kawhi Leonard's ankle injury, saying the All-Star forward will likely miss Game 2 of the Western Conference finals and calling out Zaza Pachulia for his "dangerous" and "unsportsmanlike" play. Popovich spoke to reporters Monday afternoon, less than 24 hours after Leonard suffered the injury and the Spurs squandered a 23-point third-quarter lead in their Game 1 loss to the Golden State Warriors. After taking a corner jumper, Leonard took a spill near the Spurs bench after landing on the foot of Pachulia, who said he did "what I was supposed to do and challenged his shot." Despite Leonard dismissing the notion that the injury occurred because of a dirty play by Pachulia, Popovich said Monday that the Warriors center "has a history with that kind of action." "The two-step lead with your foot closeout is not appropriate," Popovich said..........
